What is NMP miscible with?

NMP is a 5-member-ring compound containing nitrogen. It has a wide range of uses due to the following excellent characteristics. It is highly polar and miscible with most organic solvents (alcohols, ethers, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc.).

Does NMP dissolve in water?

N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) is a high boiling, polar aprotic, low viscosity liquid. NMP has a good solvency for a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds and it is miscible with water at all temperatures and has a high chemical and thermal stability.

Why is NMP used?

NMP has commonly been used in the petrochemical industry, with its high solvency and high boiling point, making it a popular option for paints and paint strippers. However, like many petrochemical solvents, NMP releases pollutants into the air if not properly recycled after use.

How do I remove NMP solvent?

NMP can actually be washed in water. If the sample is kept in water for few days NMP will be removed.

Does NMP evaporate?

First, NMP is a very slow evaporating solvent. It has a boiling point of 202°C. A thin film of NMP requires over 15,000 s for 90% evaporation at room temperature.

Why is NMP banned?

The restriction went into effect May 9, 2020. The European Chemicals Agency classifies NMP as a “Substance of Very High Concern” because of its toxicity to reproduction based on developmental toxicity.

What temperature evaporates NMP?

Compared with graphite negative electrode as a solvent [5, 6], the boiling point of positive electrode N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solvent is as high as 204℃, and its drying temperature is mostly in the range of 90-150℃ [7, 8].

How toxic is NMP?

It is toxic to the reproductive system of male and female test animals. The reproductive effects of NMP have not been studied in humans. Based on the animal tests, you should treat NMP as a potential human reproductive hazard. Overexposure to NMP irritates the eyes, skin, nose, and throat.

How flammable is NMP?

Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. Above 86°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed. NO open flames.

Is NMP banned in Europe?

To address workplace exposures, in 2018, the European Chemicals Agency issued a regulation restricting the manufacture, use, and sale of all products, including paint strippers, containing NMP in concentrations greater than 0.3% unless certain conditions are met.

Is NMP banned?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes NMP as a developmental toxicant. In 2017, EPA proposed to ban this chemical’s use in paint stripping but then shelved the proposal under pressure from industry and in 2021 officially withdrew the proposal.
